Avoid replacing long-tail terms with keywords too frequently

The website’s blog is not all about snaring traffic through your dedicated keywords. You should also be looking at ways of picking up more business through long-tail search terms used by your target audience. A lot of commercial bloggers are unaware of the benefits of long-tail search terms, but it is worth familiarising yourself with them so you can take full advantage of them.

Your blog is a unique tool for gathering long-tail search traffic. Long-tail searches are terms used by your target audience that are relevant to your business, but which aren’t actually among your stipulated keywords.

Example

A firm which provides internet security is likely to specify the term ‘internet security’ as a keyword. However, lots of people who are looking to find suitable internet security will use terms like ‘virus protection’ or ‘security for my PC’. Some bloggers type their posts with these terms in and then unwisely replace them with the term ‘internet security’, believing that using a designated keyword will prove more beneficial. These bloggers will miss out on the long-tail traffic provided by the terms they have chosen to replace.

Whilst your keywords are important, using them ahead of less obvious linguistic incarnations of an idea can be counterproductive. Remember this when writing your posts.
